What is PLA?

Polylactic Acid (PLA) is a biodegradable thermoplastic derived from renewable resources like corn starch. It is the most widely used 3D printing material, offering excellent printability, sharp detail reproduction, and a smooth surface finish.

PLA is ideal for visual prototypes, presentation models, and low-stress functional parts. While it has limited heat resistance (HDT ~52°C), its ease of printing and consistent quality make it the go-to choice for rapid iteration and design validation.

What is the maximum temperature PLA can withstand?

PLA begins to soften around 52°C. For parts exposed to heat, Nylon (180°C) or PA-GF (200°C) are better choices.

How strong is PLA compared to other materials?

PLA has a tensile strength of ~65 MPa, which is higher than PETG and PP. However, it is more brittle. For impact resistance, consider Nylon or PETG.

What surface finish can I expect?

PLA produces the smoothest finish among FDM materials, with visible but fine layer lines. Post-processing with sanding and painting achieves near-injection-mold quality.
